By analysing log files recovered from phishing sites, Netcraft found that over two thirds of visits to phishing sites are from mobile devices. Android and iOS use Google’s Safe Browsing API to block phishing attacks. However, Google’s Mobile Safe Browsing feed is not identical to the comprehensive feed used in desktop Chrome. In a study performed in 2018, Netcraft found that only a fraction of the blocks are made available to mobile users.

Netcraft’s mobile protection app for Android and iOS devices makes use of Netcraft’s industry-leading malicious site feeds to instantly block access to phishing sites discovered by Netcraft.

Over 173 million unique phishing sites have been detected and blocked by Netcraft’s system to date [February 2023] . Netcraft’s malicious site feeds are used by all major web browsers and many of the leading anti-virus, content filtering, web hosting and domain registration companies.

Protecting your Employees

With a recent increase in the number of phishing attacks targeting organisations' employees directly, Netcraft has a number of solutions to provide protection for mobile devices used within your company.

Site Licences

A site licence allows you to unlock the Netcraft app’s protection on multiple mobile devices, using a single subscription at a discounted price. Users can simply enter your site licence code in the app on each device to secure it against phishing attacks.

Branded Apps

Netcraft can develop a bespoke version of the app that includes your company’s branding and other custom features upon request. Branded apps can be privately transferred to you for installation on your devices or made available publicly in app stores.

Company-Managed Devices

Netcraft’s Content Filter solution is designed for devices supervised by Mobile Device Management (MDM) and incorporates protection against a variety of attacks that may target your employees. For example, the Content Filter solution could block attacks against your organisation itself, your email provider (for example, Office 365 or G Suite), and your banking provider. We also offer the option to protect your employees against our full phish feed.

This solution can be effortlessly rolled out across all of your devices via MDM with just a few clicks, immediately protecting all of your employees using company-owned mobile devices. Devices will receive threat updates multiple times an hour, providing near real-time protection.

Upon visiting a blocked attack, a page explaining that their organisation has disallowed access to the website in question is presented, with a link available to further information. This protection can be applied to most network connections made by the employee’s device.

App Collaboration

App collaboration is the simplest way to provide phishing protection to your customers. Although Netcraft’s mobile app normally requires a subscription, if it detects that your company’s app is also installed on the user’s device then it will automatically begin blocking phishing sites targeting your company.

This allows you to protect your customers without making any changes to your own app, provided your users also install Netcraft’s app.

Library Integration

The technology underpinning Netcraft’s anti-phishing app is also available as a library suitable for embedding in Android and iOS apps, allowing you to provide phishing protection to all customers who use your app. Unlike App Collaboration, installation of Netcraft’s app is not required.

The Android library uses accessibility services, available in Android 4.3 or later, to block access to Netcraft’s entire phishing site feed in popular web browsers, including Chrome and apps “powered by Chrome”.

The iOS library uses Apple’s Content Blocking API, available in iOS 9 or later, to block access to up to 50,000 phishing sites targeting your organisation in Safari and apps that use the Safari View Controller library (this limit is imposed by Apple).
